Angle Grinder

An angle grinder is a power tool using a continuous, abrasive disc or strip to grind materials like stone, metal, or concrete. They are used where high-speed cutting discs (such as saws) would create too much heat and be inefficient.

Types of Angle Grinders

There are four common types of angle grinders:

  • Thin-disk
  • Wire cup brush
  • Flap disk
  • Saber

Thin-disk

Thin-disk angle grinders are the most common type of angle grinder and are available in both handheld and axle-mounted types. The thin disk has a small diameter combined with a high radial depth of cut.

This allows for the removal of material at high cutting speeds but will give a rather rough finish, so it is usually used with a finishing disk to provide a smoother surface.

Wire cup brush

The wire cup brush angle grinder is used for working on surfaces of irregular shapes, such as masonry or cast-iron pipe.

The wire cup brush consists of several thin vertical wires that form the periphery of an annular array mounted onto the central hub, which rotates with the spindle.

The wires are very flexible and can be easily bent out of shape when in contact with a workpiece.

Saber

Saber saw angle grinders have a narrow spindle head, enabling the blade to cut close to internal corners or obstructions, sometimes at an oblique angle.

This assists in difficult-to-reach areas such as down the inside of a pipe or between two valves in a boiler.

Another application where such an angle grinder is helpful for contractor and commercial building cleaning services is removing ceramic tiles.

Removing tiles can be very time-consuming when done by hand with a hammer and chisel, but these handheld tools can cut through even the most challenging porcelain tiles quickly and without dust.

The saber saw is generally used with a diamond blade for cutting masonries such as brick, concrete, stone, and granite. It is also helpful for cutting pipes in plumbing installations or central heating systems, such as radiator repairs.

Flap disc

Flap disc angle grinders are designed to provide an aggressive cut rate while also allowing for efficient material removal.

They generally have blades made of fiberglass, aramid, or polyamide with a high tooth count and an extremely flexible spine, allowing the blade to follow contours when in use.

This flexibility makes them particularly useful for removing paint from surfaces like vehicles or ships before applying a new coat.

Using an Angle Grinder

The type most suited to a particular task will depend on the material being cut and whether plunge cuts or grinding is wanted. They first appeared in the 1920s but were not generally available until after World War II.

The angle grinder has many uses in construction, repair, and industry, including cutting metal with a diamond blade, sanding wood or plastic, polishing marble, and removing rust from steel.

It can also be used as a general-purpose grinding machine for ferrous and non-ferrous materials such as masonry nails.

Grinding wheels

Grinding wheels are used to remove material in a way similar to how a bench grinder operates. A popular application for small angle grinders is the removal of rust, dirt, or old paint from steel beams or iron railings.

Users with little experience are at risk of injury due to the grinder’s tendency for the disc to catch fire if allowed to stop too quickly.

An angle grinder with a side handle offers greater control over the tool and makes it easier to avoid grinding contact with adjacent surfaces.

Some angle grinders might use the same type of attachment for both kinds of material, but others need separate attachments.
